My small garden
Today I worked on my little garden as usual. I realized the grass surrounding my flower plants are getting quite long and needed to be eradicated. Otherwise it would be competing with my plants for nutrient and sunlight. But the irony of weeding out grass surrounding my flower plants is helping new grass to sprout as the competition between grass seedlings and established grass is reduced significantly. So as how effective weeding out really is? Nevertheless it is necessary to do so.
I prefer mechanical method over chemical to remove these annoying weeds. Not only it is a lot safer to use, it is also environmentally friendly and let me shed some pounds off my belly. My neighbor used herbicide to kill off the weeds. Then he used a hoe to pluck them, collected them and burnt them. The smokes and soot from the burning spread around the hood much to the annoyance of our neighbors. I usually prefer to work on smaller scale and only burn some hays.
My Roselle plants are healthy and productive. I got too many Roselle flowers on my plants that I gave some to friends for free. I do not intend to sell them in the first place. Just working on my garden as a hobby and a form of exercise. The red calyces (sepal) of the flower is edible but usually made into juice or some like to call it hibiscus tea. Only the calyces are used while the green seed pod are removed from the flower. To make the tea, the calyces are soaked in warm water until the water turns red and the calyces sink to the bottom of the glass, or whatever container one uses. I love it cold over hot. I came to love it the first time I tried the tea. It taste as good as rose syrup drink and as sour as lemonade.
I was first introduced to roselle plant by my gf. I actually got the seeds from her. She said it requires little care, would grow anywhere and produce a lot of flowers. The first time I planted the plants, they grew really well but do not produce any flower at all. Until now, I am still wondering why they won't. Then I planted a few more plants in a different location and boy the make hell lot of flowers. The new location gets more sunlight especially in the morning than the old one. So I guess morning sunlight might be the magic here.
If you haven't try Roselle tea yet, give it a try. I'm sure you are gonna like it.
