Right or wrong?

Still batting my flu that has almost put off my research plan for this week. Luckily Prof M called off the exam on Friday so we ended up getting a homework assignment that is due on the last week of the semester. Which means there would be more time to focus on my research yeah. Tyvm Prof M :)

After two days of idleness due to my health problem, I decided Friday was the day I wanna do it all. I thought I had everything I need to run my experiment, only to find one major component was missing. It was nowhere to be seen in the laboratory. Later in the afternoon, my supervisor brought the cable to me, saying it was hidden by one of Prof K's students. I decided to hide it from her in case if she's looking for it.

Later in the evening, I was told by one of my colleague that the cable belongs to Prof. K which was bought using his research grant. So by rights, his student should keep the cable and not me. I was perplexed. The cable was given to me by none other than my supervisor before I even began my research. Then, I learned from my colleague the whole situation involving my Prof. K, my supervisor and their laboratories.

Since Prof. K has already retired, my supervisor has been granted the rights to manage both laboratories which includes the rights to use any equipment and tools in both labs. The rights then are passed down to us, his students, under his approval. Three of my colleagues are given the permission to use the VNA and oven in the lab. I am not given the rights to use any equipment in the lab other than just the cable, top wrench and calibration kit. However, words are Prof. K will resume his position on a contractual basis beginning later this year. So that might change the atmosphere in the lab a bit.

I have no clue as to why his student would have to hide the cable from us or even use it. Up until yesterday, the cable never got out of our lab. If not because of my research, the cable would probably stay there collecting dust. Prof K has two other cables that are always attached to his VNA. There is only one working VNA in Prof K's lab with only two ports on the machine and both cables work fine. I do no have any idea why there would be any need to use the cable. With all the words being said however, she still has the rights to keep the cable in her lab. As what she will do with it is none of my business.

Is my decision to hide the cable from her ethical? Hard to say. Yes perhaps considering my supervisor is now in charge of both labs and has the final say on anything. No if considering the cable initially belong to Prof. K and his students. If both the student and I agree to keep the cable in one of the labs and accessible to both of us anytime, there would not be any problem. But, in this case, she found it necessary to hide it in her drawer without letting anyone know. Not even the person in charge - my supervisor. I take this as only a glitch in my research progress and should not let this matter ruins my chances to graduate with a doctorate degree.
